З 2013 года Акылбек з'яўляецца актыўным членам каракалпакскай дыяспары ў Алматы і прызнаны неафіцыйным лідарам супольнасці. Яго актывізм засяроджаны на захаванні каракалпакскай мовы, культуры і гісторыі, а таксама на каардынацыі гуманітарнай і юрыдычнай дапамогі працоўным мігрантам з Каракалпакстана і Узбекістана. У чэрвені 2022 года, пасля абвяшчэння прапануемых канстытуцыйных паправак, якія закранаюць статус Каракалпакстана, Акылбек арганізаваў кампанію па зборы петыцый у некалькіх гарадах Казахстана, уключаючы Алматы, каб выступіць супраць змен.
Акылбек быў арыштаваны казахстанскай поліцыяй 15 февраля 2024 года па запыце аб экстрадыцыі з Узбекістана. Ён утрымліваўся ў следчае ізалятары на працягу аднаго года і быў вызвалены 15 февраля 2025 года. Ва Узбекістане ён быў асуджаны сатычна без належнага паведамлення ці магчымасці абараніць сябе.
